Beyond Good & Evil

installed and played Beyond Good & Evil today. it’s a pretty cool game. you run round with a camera taking photos of things for money. i don’t really like the combat though. you can’t initiate combat unless something attacks you. i’d rather be able to attack whatever i liked…

i think i’ll go to bed early and sleep in again tomorrow…

back safe & sound from Compass

i spent the last 9 days attending the Compass Summer Conference 2006 up at Snell’s Beach. it was awesome! we spent the week looking at worldviews, and how we can relate our worldview as Christians to differing worldviews thoughout life.

the conference consisted of listening to a lot of speakers, discussing things in small groups, a lot of free time, having fun and (for some) staying up absurdly late!

i won’t enthrall you with details of every single lecture, but some of the topics included “everyone’s normal till you get to know them”, “bioethics”, “the problem of pain and suffering”, “telling great stories”, “asking great questions” and heaps of others.

some lectures were really exciting and fun, but others were boring and not so fun. i learnt heaps, but i’ll have to read over all my notes to actually figure out what that was.

on the fun side of stuff: one night we had a great debate, where small groups were given a topic to research for the day, before debating it that night. the topics were “do TV shows like Desperate Hoswives provide useful social commentary?”, “does U2 have a good Christian worldview?” and “is contraception bad?”. my small group was opposing the U2 Christian worldview and decided to go down the not-serious route.

our argument included things like: U2 supports Make Povery History, which endorses idolatry, people worship U2 and not God - not a good Christian worldview, some slipshod mathematical equation relating U2 to 666, the fact the devil, depraved and drums all start with ‘d’, that U2 is posessed by the evil spirit of rock’n'roll, etc. to top off our argument, we had Tim from the band Steriogram tell everyone about his personal experiences with Bono and how they were all evil.

we lost :oD but we had a great time!

we had the afternoons off to do whatever, so i hung out with some great people. went to the beach (shock! horror!) a few times, went snorkelling, played a lot of volleyball and table tennis, spent time just chillin’ out and had some great conversations ranging from “what would happen in my internal organs procrastinated as much as i did” to “Captain Planet’s mullet” to “the existence of the universe and everything in it”.

i was usually one of the last people to go to bed, and one of the first people awake the next day. i survived Sat 14th - Sun 22nd on 40 hours of sleep somehow, and then managed to stay awake on Sunday to drive for 10 or so hours to get home.

i had an awesome time and met some awesome people!
