Praxis: round two. [ding, ding] learn!

it is tomorrow. well, it's yesterday's tomorrow, so here is an update with some exciting stories. exciting for me, at least...

Sunday:

drove up to Auckland. picked up a hitchhiker in Waikanae and drove him all the way to Manukau. his name was Jonas and he was from Germany. Met Mell in Auckland and went to her church. hung out at her place later and crashed there for the night.

Monday:

drove all the way out to Parakai, to a community called Peacemakers where our first module was being held. it was cool seeing people again. the Mystic, the Justice Maker and the Comedian (Dallas, Jen and myself) were reunited :o) it was great fun. the house we were staying at was huge, with something like 10 bedrooms and 3 lounges. the module was called 'reflective practitioner' and we talked a lot about spirituality. i got some people addicted to Catan. muahaha. stayed up late catching up with Jen.

Tuesday:

you've got to love it when you wake up out to views like this:

Peacemakers have their own pool!

some kind of tree...

today we covered spiritual traditions and personality. it's a lot of work, and the assignments are going to be interesting. i've got assignments for three modules this term. a lot of work!

after all the learning and meals, we played games all night. played a couple of games of Catan with my new converts.

Hannah, PK and Aimee: Catan converts...

played Phase 10 as well. the other people playing weren't as competitive as the Palmie Team Xers, so i had a chance to win :o) i also played some weird justice making game on a laptop with Jen. we never did get our prisoner released, but we got more of our team imprisoned. hmm...

Wednesday:

cooked up some french toast for breakfast. it went pretty fast and nobody died. both good signs. talked about simplicity and spiritual timelines. pretty interesting stuff. we cleaned up the house and those who weren't doing the next module said goodbye.

Hannah, Jen, Alana, Aimee, Rachel, Mark, PK, me and Dallas

me and Dallas crashed at Jen and Hannah's flat for the next few days. the second module was being run in Auckland at the Praxis offices.

Thursday:

the second module was 'introduction to counselling'. today's stuff was all theory. some of it i'd learnt about back at uni doing my Educational Psychology papers. it was all pretty good stuff though.

Jen went out and bought Phase 10 afterwards, so we played that tonight back at her flat. Dallas turned up with a Leunig DVD with a bunch of animated shorts on it, so we watched that while playing. some were pretty funny. others were pretty random.

Friday:

today was a lot of practical stuff, putting things we learnt yesterday into practice. everyone was trying to bring out the lingo, like 'introducing secondary introjections' and other such phrases. the great thing was that we all knew what each other was on about :o) i got to do a role play in which i played a non-complient counselling client. fun stuff :o)

Dallas cruised home tonight. me and Jen went up Mt. Eden and looked around, then went to Greg's (one of the Praxis workers) house for dinner. he lives with his family in a community with a lot of single mums. hung out with the kids of one such mum and had a great time. Me, Jen and Greg walked her and her kids home and we got invited in by her 5-year old to watch the Care Bears movie. i got invited to sleep over, but had to decline.

me and Jen went for a random drive later, we were going to go to one of her friends' houses, but drove past it and kept driving 'til we ended up at Piha. we hung out in her car and just talked. it was awesome. cruised back to the flat and mucked around for ages. we were both really tired, so everything was funny :o) ended up going to bed at 2:30am or something.

Saturday:

Jen, as a campus minister at a Catholic school, is involved with kids from Young Vinnies. it's some kind of Catholic group. i don't know anything about it, but there was a big meeting of all the Young Vinnies groups from Auckland, so Jen had to go to it. i tagged along. it was interesting. there was a concert and lunch was put on, so that's all good.

me an Jen went into Auckland city later and saw 'Meet the Robinsons'. it was great :o) we borrowed a projector on the way back to the flat and set it up in Jen's room, pointing at the roof. chilled out and watched Troy. watched The Black Dahlia. it was a film noir that made no sense to me. maybe it's because i was really tired, but even Scarlett Johansson didn't save the movie for me.

Sunday:

said my goodbyes and drove away from Auckland. no hitchhikers on the way home. stopped in Palmie for an hour or so and caught up with a bunch of Team Xers. that was cool :o)

managed to get a photo of the cool sunset on the way home from Palmie. it's not easy taking photos from a car moving at 100kph

pretty cool, huh?

got back home safe and sound.

and that was my trip to Auckland!

this post is just to let you know i'm home.

well, i'm home and full of exciting stories to tell, but they will have to wait until tomorrow i'm afraid. i can't be bothered right now uploading and editing photos, and stories without pictures aren't as fun.

so, i shall do it tomorrow.

at least, if you're reading this, you can go to sleep tonight with the knowledge that i'm home safe and sound.

dreams are free...

had a haircut today. Maria, who cut my hair last time, doesn't work there anymore, so i had another new lady cut my hair. that's my fourth hairdresser in as many haircuts.

went into Porirua and met up with Jo for lunch. we went to Café Pica. it was alright. we played mini golf afterwards. it was close, but i won by one shot :o) Jo scored three holes-in-one though...kinda evens it out. we went to Harvey Norman afterwards and checked out stuff. played Guitar Hero for a bit and bet all the little kids who were playing. muahaha! if i had a spare $20,000, then i'd buy a big screen TV and all the add-ons and a flash lounge suite. but i don't, so i can't. i can dream though. dreams are free...

[adam dreams about owning lots of flash stuff...ooh, and a nice house to put it all in. and inviting people round to watch DVDs on the big screen!]

went to a Team X family BBQ tonight. none of my family could make it. meh...hung out and chatted with the team and their families. it was cool.

i still haven't packed for Auckland and i'm leaving tomorrow. it's not hard to pack for a week though. i've done it enough times over the last few weeks! i'll do it tomorrow morning.

finished one project...got to start another

had another pretty good day in the office today. it's a fun working environment. just like what i always wanted to work in :o) we played Catan this morning, then did all the hard work this afternoon.

it is finished. it is good. the Team X newsletter Vol 1 2oo7 is all done. i don't have a screenshot of it, but if i did, i would post it here. it took all week, but it's finally finished. next project: website. that's going to be another fun and time-consuming project...

went out to my KRANC group tonight. it was cool. hung out with everyone and did a Bible study. played Pictionary later. it was fun. i hope that this group lasts for a while and that i can get to know some of the kids a bit better.

TXHV newsletter = 80% complete-ish

did pretty much the same kinda stuff at Team X today, but today it felt like i was doing a lot of work :o) finished up the script for the Purpose & Objectives part of our G2KTX programme, then did a lot more work on the newsletter. it's looking cooler than any other newsletter in TXHV history. i'm very proud of it. now all we need to do is fill in the content and it'll be ready to send out.

i'm also stoked because i found a nifty little programme that turns any documents into .pdf format, so we can e-mail our newsletter around the world. i'm pretty sure that everyone had a .pdf viewer on their computer...not everyone has MS Publisher. which i'm using to make the newsletter. 'cos the only other option is Coreldraw. and Coreldraw sucks. my worst nightmare would probably involve having to use Coreldraw. on a mac. while being forced to watch Unbreakable. alone.

anyways...this isn't a post about nightmares. (this is)

came home and started playing FEAR: Extraction Point. mucked around on my comp and watched TV all night.

Bed, Bath & Beyond

went to Team X again today and spent more time doing something. wrote up a script for one of our programmes and then spent some more time on the newsletter and then the day was finished again. at this rate, i'm never going to get the newsletter done! i'm going to run out of week!

spent the night at home watching TV. Mum wanted to know what i thought of our new bathmats and a new throw that she bought for one of the chairs in our lounge. i made some comment about that she must have been shopping at Bed, Bath & Beyond and she was amazed. 'cos she had been. then i was amazed, 'cos i didn't even know we had that in NZ.

weird.

time flies when you're...?

went to Team X today. it was cool being back with the team. we caught up and talked through the plan for the up-coming term. i'm sure i did some work, but i'm not sure why it took so long. i spent a while editing pictures for the newsletter and trying out settings for the newsletter, but then the whole day seemed to have passed. weird. we played Catan for a while before finishing up for the day.

went out to WIT tonight. it was pretty cool. went out to a café later and caugt up with Alana and Aimee and Jen from Auckland. it'll be cool seeing them for more than an hour next week in Auckland with Praxis.

beating FEAR

today was my holiday. back to work tomorrow, so i made the most of my time off. played FEAR for about 3hrs this morning. got pretty far.

watched The Princess Bride later. it's a great movie, but i think i'll put it in my pile of DVDs that would be better to watch with a girlfriend. now the pile consists of one DVD...

baked some ANZAC biscuits later. then ate some to make sure they were alright. they were fantastic. ate some more.

played more FEAR and clocked it. yay. i like games that i can clock. now i'll move onto FEAR: Extraction Point. hopefully i'll be able to clock that too...

spent the rest of my night mucking round on my computer and watching The 40 Year-Old Virgin. it's funny.

i'd better go to bed now, seeing as how i have to get up in the morning. i need to get back into my Team X routine...

El Rancho Junior Camp

well, i had a fantastic time at El Rancho this past week leading one of their kids' camps, and have finally almost recovered. recovered from what, you ask? well...

Tuesday:

got to El Rancho and split up into groups with the other leaders and staff for some group initiatives. they were pretty fun. started to get to know a few more of the leaders. the only person i knew to start with was Nicole from Palmie Team X. had a few leader's meetings, then did more initiatives in the afternoon. had some worship, then dinner. the kids started arriving at 6pm. chatted with a few of the other leaders while waiting for the kids in my cabin to arrive.

we all got into our team colours later (our cabin was in the blue team, which we ended up naming Blue Suede Boots) and we came up with a chant. nothing like the effort that goes into the chants at Connexions...we played games later, then had some more worship and listened to George Tahi who was our speaker for the week.

the kids in my cabin were a pretty rowdy bunch, so bedtimes were always fun. it always took the nightwatch staff coming in to our cabin and threatening them to get them to be quiet and go to sleep...

Wednesday:

prayer meetings at 6:30am. ugh. got up regardless. can't say the same for my cabin co-leaders. breakfast followed by camp duties. cleaning toilets is an interesting experience with a bunch of un-enthusiastic yet overly-excited boys. had more worship and George spoke again, then we played our first wide game. it was pretty fun. ate lunch then had cabin time. none of my kids were interested, so i let them run rampant and went and hung out with one of the more sedate girls' cabins.

i helped out with the flying fox all afternoon. at the bottom this time, so now i am highly skilled at both ends of the El Rancho flying fox. cool. after dinner, the boys and girls split up and the boys went down to the Burma Trail. we followed a string through a path in the forest, but the moon was out and it was bright, so we could see where we were going. meh...

Thursday:

same as yesterday. my boys were more reluctant to get up this morning. played another wide game which was funner than yesterday. i was scoring for another team, but still had a great time. the afternoon was pretty much the same. helped out at the flying fox for the remaining two colours. hung out and chatted with other leaders and kids later.

tonight the boys played games in the hall which was fun. had more worship and another session with George before trying to get my boys to bed.

Friday:

insetad of a wide game this morning we played tug-of-war. it was cool. the blue team bet everyone, the girls bet the boys...and the leaders, and the boy leaders bet the girl leaders 2/3 times.

this afternoon we had a treasure hunt. all the cabins went after clues which led them round a bunch of activities and challenges. i was leading one of the challenges, so couldn't run round with my cabin, but they came 4th, so that's pretty cool.

tonight, we all played games in the hall. great fun. the last night of camp is usually the most interesting when it comes to kids sleeping. they're mostly so tired that they want to just go to sleep, but then there's always some who are so hyper that they make everyone's night fun.

Saturday:

clean up day. basically cleaned up the camp until the kids' parents came and picked them up from 10am. then the leaders were free. we had a debrief, then did some more cleaning. ate lunch, the hung out and chatted. a few of us went for a swim in the pool. it was very cold, but once i got use to not feeling my toes, it was quite nice.

said goodbye to the remaining leaders then drove home. ate tea, then mucked around until going to bed at the camp-recovery time of 7:30pm

Sunday:

got up at the camp-recovery time of 9:30am feeling not so tired :o) spent most of the day watching DVDs. watched The Fugitive and Godzilla and all their special features, then some of the special features from the Indiana Jones trilogy. Jen, Ann, Dan and his parents came round for tea. it was fun.

here's a photo of my cabin on one of the cleaner days. it's like one of those 'can you find...' pictures:

this is reasonably clean...

can you find:
9 shoes
8 sleeping bags
4 campers
2 co-leaders
2 backpacks
1 cellphone
1 plastic bag
1 washing basket
