the problem with DVDs...
i bought some more DVDs today. 7 to be exact. 4 movies complete with 3 bonus discs. only cost $60, and i scored 4 stamps on my bonus DVD card.
that's not the problem.
the problem with DVDs is that there is no consistency with the DVDs released worldwide at all! first off, the zoning laws suck and do nothing to combat piracy. but the main problem lies in the fact that companies are now rushing to get their movies to DVD as quickly as they can, so about 4-5 months after finishing at the cinema, a movie can be rented or bought on DVD. these days, this first copy is usually a stripped down version with maybe one commentary, one "making of" and a deleted scene that was in the original movie trailer.
so people go and buy the DVD thinking "yay! now i own <whatever movie>"
but then! another copy of the DVD comes out. usually it's called the "special edition", "extended cut", "director's cut", "collector's edition", "extended special über director's cut collector's box set"...you get the idea.
this is the copy that you probably wanted in the first place. more commentaries, more special features, a bonus disc with a whole bunch more stuff on it. usually, i manage to pick up this version, but haven't always been so lucky...
some companies are even releasing 3rd or 4th editions (i.e. LOTR trilogy).
following is the list of DVDs i own that i know have better versions available:
* The Matrix Trilogy (now available in 10 disc über collector's edition)
* A Bug's Life
* Shrek
* Demolition Man
* LOTR trilogy (i only own the stripped down 2 disc copy of each movie...not the 4 disc copies)
* Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (zone 4 version available! i've got the zone 1 version)
* Pitch Black (now called The Chronicles of Riddick: Pitch Black, with extra features)
* Pirates of The Caribbean (3 disc special set available)
* Robots (zone 1 version has about 10 times as many features as the zone 4 version)
so yeh. thus ends my rant.

it's not worth rebuying for the 1 or 2 extra things they're putting on...
i also wouldn't actually rebuy half the DVDs i listed...i was just ranting :oP (Comment this)
